Not very long ago I decided that true love wasn’t for me. The idea was nice, but it just seemed so unobtainable. So unrealistic. It was something reserved for princesses in fairy tales, something followed by dreams coming true and a magical happily ever after. Life isn’t like that, or at least mine wasn’t.
I was a single mother, and my hopes of a happily ever after had been shattered by the breakdown of my relationship with my child’s father. Everything I had ever wanted had been snatched away from me and in that moment I genuinely never thought I’d find love, or even happiness, again. Finding someone to love me, as broken as I was, just seemed impossible. It seemed too hard and too difficult, too much to ask and too much expect.
And then there was you.
The sound of your voice gave me the butterflies I thought I had forgotten how to feel. The touch of your hand gave me the goosebumps I never thought I’d have again. Catching your eye sent the shivers down my spine that I’d only ever dreamt about. Kissing you set off the fireworks I’d only ever heard other people describe, and they were more incredible than anything I’d ever known.
You saw me when I couldn’t see myself. You picked me up when I couldn’t carry on, and you loved me even when I had stopped loving myself. You pushed me when I needed to be strong and you held me when I needed to be weak. You built me up when I was broken, you gave me purpose when I had no direction, and you heard me when my voice was nearly gone. You found me, when I thought I was lost forever, and you healed me when I thought the damage could never be undone. You took us both in to your life and your heart when I thought that was something no one would ever do again.
Our love isn’t an easy one. It’s about the real adult tough stuff, not poisoned apples and fairy godmothers. I can’t promise you fairy tales. I can’t promise you sailing off into the sunset. I can’t promise you it’ll be easy, and I can’t even promise that I won’t be a miserable cow occasionally.
But I can promise you that our love is real. I can promise you that I am yours for as long as you are mine, and that together we can create our own version of a happily ever after. It might look a little different to how we had planned, but that’s okay because it’s real, and it’s ours, forever.
