Family-friendly activities in Malta

Planning a family holiday can be a bit daunting. There are lots of factors to consider: age of the travellers, activity options, flight times…. the list goes on.

Malta has always been a popular destination, but often for older holidaymakers. But there has been a rise in recognition for how great it is for families too, especially as the flight time is between 3 and 4 hours from Ireland.

If you are looking at booking a stress-free and enjoyable trip to Malta, here are some tips to get you going.

Best family attractions in Malta for young children

Malta is a small group of islands, but they are full of great attractions for all ages. There is a mix of both indoor and outdoor attractions, meaning that whatever the weather, you will be able to have fun.

The Playmobil Fun Park is a hit with kids of all ages, with an endless supply of indoor and outdoor toys. It is the perfect place to let your imaginations run wild and create some magical memories.

For nature lovers, the Malta National Aquarium is a must. Home to sharks and octopi as well as a whole reptile exhibit, you are likely to see creatures that you wouldn’t see back home.

Family beach days and outdoor adventures

One of the best Maltese beaches is Golden Bay. This beach is nicely sheltered and slopes gently into the sea, making it ideal for those who are less confident with swimming. Golden Bay is a designated Blue Flag beach, which means there is a high level of cleanliness and services, including a kiosk selling food and sunbed rentals.

Paradise Bay is another top choice and perfect if you want a bit of a quieter day. Another plus is that it is close to the ferry, so you can go exploring if the kids get a bit restless.

Exploring Malta’s history in a child-friendly way

Malta is steeped in history, and there are plenty of ways to explore it. A fun-packed Malta holiday wouldn’t be complete without a trip to The Knights of Malta Museum. Here you can learn about Crusader times and immerse yourself in the stories with interactive parts, lighting effects and so much more.

The Mosta Rotunda is a stunning example of Maltese architecture. Standing tall against the test of time, this working church is an interesting place to visit for all.

Practical tips for planning a family trip to Malta

The best time to visit Malta is the months skirting the summer holidays. Visiting between April and June or September and November will give you a pleasant climate and avoid the scorching heat of summer.

It can be tempting to pack as much activity in as possible, but remember to pace yourself. Factoring in relaxation time for the kids (and yourself!) is important too. Consider doing one day on, one day off – a busy day followed by a beach or pool day. Most importantly, have fun!
