How to Create the Perfect Cosy Snug

Whether you want to create a space to keep cosy and warm during the winter months or a quiet space in your home where you can unwind after a busy day at work, a cosy snug in your house is the perfect solution. This article will provide some top tips for creating a snug in your home, from furnishing and lighting to choosing the right colour palette.

Choose the right location

One of the first things you need to consider is where the best place in your house is to create your snug. If you have a small space that is currently unloved and unused, this could make the ideal choice. The smaller the better too when it comes to a snug, so you could use a corner in your dining room or guest bedroom for example without sacrificing the whole room. Some people often create a snug at the top of the landing too.

Comforting textiles and furnishing

Choose plush, comfortable seating such as a snug armchair or small bay window-style seat where you can curl up and watch the world go by. You’ll want to have plenty of comforting textiles to keep you cosy, so make sure you have lots of soft cushions and throws handy to keep you warm and add texture and depth to the space. This will provide you with the perfect place to curl up with a good book and a warm drink and spend a relaxing evening.

Ambient lighting

Creating a cosy atmosphere is all about lighting. Keep the lights dim and use warm bulbs and shades to create a serene and tranquil ambience. Instead of a bright ceiling light, it’s better to go for free-standing lamps you can perch next to while you read. Dainty fairy lights, lanterns and candles are also a must!

Add a fireplace feature

Is there anything more appealing than the sounds of a crackling log fire? The addition of a feature fireplace will help you nail the cosy snug aesthetic, while also keeping you toasty and warm in the colder months. If you are unable to add a real fire, you could choose an alternative like a plug-in electric version or a small log-burning stove.

Muted colour palette

You want to go for warm and deep colours when it comes to decorating the space. They will help you create a place that is inviting and intimate. A deep colour palette will also make the space feel more calming and serene, as brighter colours can often make a room feel overbearing. Think deep reds, dark greens, and inky blues. If you have a window to dress, plush heavy curtains will make the perfect addition and add a sense of opulence to the space.
