How Donor Eggs Can Help Expand Your Family

Many women grow up with certain ideas about how their future will look.

They envision having the college degree, the beginning of a career, stability, love, marriage, and then, yes, probably a baby. But what happens when biology doesn’t fall in line with the master plan you’ve created for your life? What happens when you and your partner are unable to naturally conceive the child you’ve been hoping for?

Choosing to learn more about the egg donation process is the first step to achieving the family you’ve always wanted.

Are Donor Eggs the Right Choice for You?

Life would be so much simpler if there was always a clear-cut reason for difficulties conceiving.

Whether it’s your first baby or not, there are few things in life more disheartening than infertility struggles, especially when the issue involves a woman’s egg quality.

Thankfully, there are other options – like frozen donor egg IVF – available to help women create their dream families.

If a woman’s infertility stems from poor egg quality, there’s very little chance IUI or traditional IVF will work. Donor egg IVF, on the other hand, will still allow her to experience the gift of pregnancy and provide the opportunity for her to bring a child into the world.

While some women may feel concern over the lack of a genetic connection to a donor egg, scientific studies show certain DNA molecules can be absorbed by the embryo throughout pregnancy. This, in turn, allows the baby’s mother to become a part of the child’s genetic makeup.

Science aside, the connection formed between mother and child throughout pregnancy is something strong and irreplaceable. Genetics or not, frozen donor egg IVF still offers the gift of experience so many potential mothers hope for.

Choosing Donor Egg IVF – How Should You Feel?

There’s no right or wrong way to feel about donor egg usage – allow yourself to experience whatever emotions you have about the decision. What’s most important is how you respond to those feelings and deal with them.  Don’t jump into the donor egg process before you’re ready, and don’t hesitate to ask a counsellor for help in overcoming any negative emotions surrounding the experience.

Take time to take care of yourself, and your journey to becoming a family will be that much more successful.

Frozen Donor Egg IVF: How Does it Work?

The first step in a frozen donor egg IVF cycle is to select your donor.

Most clinics share the same collection of requirements for their donors, so you can feel confident your selected individual has undergone certain screenings, like:

  • Drugs and STD Screenings
  • General Health Examination
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Background Checks

Once you’ve chosen a donor, their eggs will be transported to your own fertility clinic for thawing and fertilisation.

While this step is taking place, you’ll undergo a general reproductive health evaluation so your doctor may prescribe a protocol of medications, usually progesterone and oestrogen, to help develop your uterus and endometrial lining for the upcoming embryo transfer.

During this period, your progress will be monitored through blood work and transvaginal ultrasounds. When your team of nurses determines you’re ready, the fertilised egg will be placed into your uterus using a thin catheter and ultrasound technology.

Becoming a Family with Donor Eggs

There’s no shame in infertility or poor egg quality – these issues are simply roadblocks to overcome.

At the end of the day, hearing the words “You’re pregnant” will feel just as special whether they stem from a natural pregnancy or donor egg IVF.

If the goal is to expand your family despite infertility struggles, the answer could be just a phone call away. Educate yourself on the opportunities available and realise lacklustre eggs are not the period at the end of the sentence.

They’re simply the ellipsis before the rest of the story.
